The growing need for saving electric power increases the demand for fluorescent lamps. They use 25% of the power needed by an incandescent lamp and last approximately 10 times longer. The use of fluorescent lamps is increasing and generating a considerable volume to be disposed of. According to information obtained on 2001, Brazil has about 85 million fluorescent lamps in the market, but only about 1.5% is appropriately disposed of.
